Happy almost March everyone! This is just a quick post to drop in and say that I'm more regularly posting on Pretty Little World through the Tumblr account! I hope to see you there!

Begins Again.Obviously it's been awhile since I've posted. Like, months. I just got to the point where I wasn't really enjoying blogging anymore. It got to feel like a chore, and then one day I didn't post. And then the next I didn't either. And then I just kept right on not posting at all, and here we are two months later.

And I didn't miss it. Not one bit. Running a blog is a job, and I have enough jobs. Really.

What I did start to miss in these last couple of weeks was having a place to share cool.fun.amazing.pretty.interesting things that I'd come across. But every time I'd start to think about writing a new post, that chore-like feeling would creep up, and nothing ever got written. So here's the deal-y-o: from now, I'm just going to use my Tumblr (which I've had on the back burner forevvvvvveeeerrr).

I can share what I find.
No pressure to write.
No pressure to get comments or followers or all of those things bloggers are supposed to be after.
No, "Blurgh" feeling.

You can find it here: Pretty Little World on Tumblr.

To end the post, I just want to add a big "Thank You!" to everyone who's stopped by over the five years that I've been (consistently or otherwise) blogging here. Have a wonderful day.weekend.month.summer.year everyone!!Pretty Little Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10029160199704264240noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3449332539743813226.post-69682218221703931752012-03-26T07:14:00.000-07:002012-03-26T07:14:34.954-07:00Early Spring

I don't know what the weather has been like elsewhere, but spring came amazingly early to Michigan this year. While we're normally still dealing with a stray snowstorm or two, last week was filled with 80 degree temperatures and an abundance of sunshine. Today is a bit cooler and more of what you'd expect from the beginnings of the season, though it was still a welcome site to see pretty little blossoms peeking out all over the place.Pretty Little Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10029160199704264240noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3449332539743813226.post-90479514683648198602012-03-21T11:02:00.000-07:002012-03-21T11:02:15.167-07:00Three Years In...I get tired of the way things look very often. Offffftennn. And while a winning lottery ticket would allow me to simply refurnish the house whenever I felt like it, well, I don't have a winning lottery ticket. So yesterday I rearranged all of the furniture in the upstairs so things simply felt new. Here's how it went:

Master bedroom --> What was previously the guest bedroom.
Guest Bedroom + Office --> What was previously the master bedroom.
Reading nook --> What was previously the office (really just a space for a large desk that no one ever used)

I wish that I'd taken some "before" pictures of how it had been arranged, but I almost never remember that sort of thing until after the moving has happened. So I have some "before" pictures of what the upstairs was like when we first bought the house and will have to make due with those.
I still need some wall things here and there and maybe another plant or two, but overall I'm pretty please with the way that the rearrangement went. Now that everything is moved about, it quite feels like this is the way the house is meant to be. Which of course makes me feel silly that for the last few years that I've been one evening of work away from a much more pleasing space. Such is life...Pretty Little Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10029160199704264240noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3449332539743813226.post-63773846825705938442012-03-20T05:55:00.000-07:002012-03-20T05:55:30.062-07:00#Instacats

Nice weather means that it's finally time to pull out those spring dresses. Unfortunately it also means that my allergies are coming right along with everything else. My seasonal allergies just seem to cripple me at times. I've got a doctor's appointment in the next week, but in the meantime: do any of you suffer from the springtime sneezes? How do you cope with them??Pretty Little Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10029160199704264240noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3449332539743813226.post-8566142046625674162012-03-13T05:36:00.002-07:002012-03-13T05:38:00.616-07:00Dream Rooms: Marrakech
<img src="http://a.imageshack.us/img43/4509/52635889364710922hmrap8.jpg"style="width:768px; height:1024px" alt="" />
The room above is about as dreamy as they could come. Of course the wall full of windows helps a great deal, but I like how they've made the room + windows seem even larger by hanging the curtain rod far above the window-tops.

While the room does have a decidedly Moroccan flair to it, they've managed to get away with mixing a few different prints and styles: the folksy floral print on the chair nearest the window; the more modern two piece sofa; and the bright Persian rug that anchors the room.Pretty Little Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10029160199704264240noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3449332539743813226.post-80355033817057851142012-03-11T22:04:00.001-07:002012-03-12T08:23:29.381-07:00A Little Grunge Never Hurt Anyone
<img src="http://a.imageshack.us/img845/3391/tumblrlgz3rjghny1qcvwxq.jpg"style="width:768px; height:1024px" alt="" />
I don't really remember how I came across this video now - Pinterest? Could be. Pinterest is good for, like, everything - but I'm smitten with it. I suspect everyone else will be too. It's slow and perfect and you kind of can't take your eyes off of it.

P.S. - I actually had planned on starting to blog again as soon as I got back from Chicago this past Sunday, but I immediately came down with this throat.sinus.cold.thing, so ce la vie to best laid plans, right? Sorry for the long gap(s) between posts recently. There's been a whole slew of crazy stuff going on at work + I've been spending some time catching up with old friends + we've been doing some things around the house + I've been trying to spend a little more free time reading books that I've had on my "Want to Read" list for, like, ever.

In any case - I'm headed to Chicago this coming weekend, and then perhaps Cleveland after that, but I PROMISE that I'll be back to some kind of regular posting soon.

I hope that absolutely.positively.everything is going well for all of you and I'll see you all very shortly!!
Even though these wall (and floor!) prints are quite busy, the neutral color scheme in both allows them to be a bit less noticeable, so that you can layer the room in additional ways without it being too much.
This mated pair of cardinals lives very near our house. I love it whenever we can see them out and about, but they're especially cute in the winter when they're all puffed up. The male always lets the female eat from the feeder first, and he keeps an eye out while she gets her seeds! Adorable.Pretty Little Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10029160199704264240noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3449332539743813226.post-37777822654328630782012-02-14T06:26:00.000-08:002012-02-15T07:22:32.380-08:00Splurge or Save: The Peplum Jacket

There's something about garments with an exaggerated peplum that I just love. Maybe it's the ultra defined structure. Maybe it's the clothing equivalent of dotting each "i" with a little heart - a perfect flourish.

Some people will probably say that you have to have a narrow body today to be able to pull off this style, but I think that if you pick the right cut and the right pieces to go with it, most anyone can get away with it.

Things to keep in mind when choosing a peplum top or jacket: (1) While the peplum itself is full, make sure that the garment has a slim fit in the arms and bodice. If it's not quite right, take it to a local tailor - it's inexpensive to have clothing taken in a bit, and it makes a world of difference. (2) Go slim with the bottoms as well, as in ultra skinny jeans or a pencil skirt. Any extra volume at the bottom and it will look like you're drowning in your outfit.

Now the question is: which to choose? Splurge on this glamorous jacket from Givenchy, a mere $4145.00, or save on this Tibi striped peplum jacket, $495.00?Pretty Little Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10029160199704264240noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3449332539743813226.post-85526979471124382572012-02-11T07:33:00.000-08:002012-02-11T07:34:48.942-08:00Bohemian

This incredible unseasonably warm weather (which is taking a slight siesta today - we have snow everywhere) has led me to 100% believe that spring is like, three days away. Every morning while getting dressed, I have a little conversation with myself that involves wondering whether I can wear platform sandals yet. I can't, but I have settled on open-toed shoes a few times.

And since spring is almost surely, very nearly here, I can start thinking about summer too. Summer is filled with floaty bohemian dresses + skirts, and I've begun adding to my collection of 1970s dresses a little ahead of time:
I just came across these hand-painted and/or hand-wrapped bangles from Aramar this morning, and am already smitten. An armful of bracelets is an easy way to create a focal point for an otherwise plain outfit. And who wouldn't love to have some of these brightly colored, hand-crafted pretties dangling around their wrists?

It's difficult to choose, but I think my favorite is the yellow with the bicycle - it's just so bright and fun!
One of the nice things about teaching college writing is that jobs are everywhere. (The downside: the pay is pretty horrible.) So whenever I get a pinch of wanderlust, I start trolling for jobs that are more than 15 miles from where I grew up. (Yes, I'm that close to my hometown.)

I especially like looking through the out-of-country listings, and recently came across an opening in Micronesia. I had to Google where exactly that was, as I had a reference point for Indonesia, but not Micronesia. It turns out that it's kind of, sort of in between Hawaii and Australia. Like, middle-of-the-ocean nowheresville.

The pay was really, really low ($15k / year), but in photos the island nation seems like one of the prettiest places possibly anywhere, so... tempting? Besides, what would you need extra money for when you lived someplace like this? Of course, with a fiance, a mortgage, and three cats, I won't be moving to a tropical paradise anytime soon.

Still, wouldn't it be nice to wake up every day to this?
Lana del Rey's new album (first album??) hits iTunes today, and I'm honestly pretty excited to give it a listen. About a month ago people were all crazy over her SNL performance, as though it were the worst ever. I loved it though. It was weird.lovely.amazing. She's kind of like the songstress version of a David Lynch film. I've had these images sitting on my desktop for awhile now, waiting for the perfect post in which to share them. Well, I haven't figured out what that post is, so I'm just sending them out there for people to see!

I hope that everyone's Mondays went okay! My day was strange and random:

- woke to all of our snow melted
- had coffee
- went to Staples for bubble wrap
- packaged orders
- watched a few episodes from the final season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl (I could watch this show a million times over - sooo good!)
- went to the post office
- went to the grocery store (fifth day in a row! ugh.)
- picked up the dry cleaning
- came home to find that boy had actually (and accidentally) made me decaf coffee in the morning. seriously. no wonder I was ready to rip people's heads off!!
- made REAL coffee
- listed some pretty vintage kimonos
- now: going to make the boy pick up Thai for dinner. Hey - he's got to make up for the coffee mishap somehow!Pretty Little Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10029160199704264240noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3449332539743813226.post-16752574383800461152012-01-18T09:44:00.000-08:002012-01-18T10:22:52.595-08:00Neon

Neon is still looking like it will be quite big for spring, and while neon is probably not what you'd call "classic", I'm certainly glad that it's sticking around for awhile longer.

Neon brights are flattering on absolutely everyone, no skin tones excepted. When thinking about what neon color to choose, you want to stick with the same color palette that you'd normally wear: if you have paler skin / hair, and yellow isn't normally great on you, neon yellow isn't going to look any better. (Notice how in the last two pictures, you notice the brunette first & then the sweater, whereas on the blonde, you almost only notice the dress.)

If you have a lighter complexion and hair: pinks, reds, and blues.
If you have a darker complexion and hair: greens, yellows, and blues. and reds. and pinks. (you can pretty much pull off anything.)

P.S. - I'm hoping to snag a pair of these Audrey Silk Mules, also from Acne.Pretty Little Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10029160199704264240noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3449332539743813226.post-78882632902028222832012-01-16T11:02:00.000-08:002012-01-16T11:03:57.806-08:00The Finer ThingsI don't have a lot of what you would call "nicer jewelry." I almost always go for piling on costume pieces - especially when it comes to earrings, as I lose those like mad. Every now and then I have the inclination to grow the nicer part of my jewelry box, but, you know, it's expensive. So I thought that I'd introduce the handful of fancy pieces that I do have.

This first two are my favorite and also most special. This is my engagement ring:

The boy did really well with this one (of course, he knew ahead of time that I just loved this ring - but he remembered! sooo important.) It's a Deco Style platinum diamond ring from Tiffany & Co. It's not traditional, but I love the design and the way that it sparkles.

The next is my maternal grandmother's engagement ring:

It's so delicate and pretty. Sometimes I pair it with my own engagement ring.

Then there are my "still nice, but not diamonds" jewels. This necklace is a one-of-a-kind necklace from Ayala Bar. I bought this at a teeny jewelry store when I was in Stratford, Ontario ages ago:

The beading on this is just exquisite - it looks marvelous with a simple t-shirt and a dark blazer. The next piece also comes from the same jewelry shop in Ontario, though it was purchased a year earlier:

It's a floral cuff from Israeli designer Michal Negrin. It was even custom made to fit my wrist! The brand's service is also impeccable - if one of the Swarovski crystals were ever to fall out, I'd need only to send in the bracelet, and they'd repair it for me!

The two rings also quite special. The first is an amethyst geode and sterling silver ring that I got out west:

The second is a ring that I got in Insadong, Seoul, South Korea. Except for a few other trinkets, this was really the only thing that I bought while we were there:

P.S. - This post was meant to be up earlier, but when I Googled my grandmother + grandfather's wedding date for the post (1946), I ended up finding loads of genealogy information on my mother's side of the family -- I got all of the way back to 1735!! It was super interesting to read about - I may do a post on it down the road, when some of it's a little more organized.Pretty Little Worldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10029160199704264240noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3449332539743813226.post-31469933945517518232012-01-13T08:13:00.000-08:002012-01-13T08:13:01.242-08:00Nestled

Country Living recently had a feature on how you should be lounging around the house in a pretty kimono instead of an old bathrobe.
