Thomas Crown

{ 1 } { 2 } { 3 } { 4 }

Aren't these images of Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway from the original The Thomas Crown Affair just smoldering? I could watch this movie over and over again. I actually liked the remake, but I'll take Steve McQueen over Pierce Brosnan any day.

This semester is almost through, so I'm looking forward to some days that can be taken up with nothing other than old movies and good books. What's standing between me and that time: a holiday party, a long overdue visit from a good friend (both of these, obviously go in the "good busy" category), a little stretch of grading, Christmas shopping (no, I'm not done), an auction, and a short non-vacationy trip up north.

Doable, right?

Saturday . Outfit . Post

Sweatshirt: Forever21, $12.00 (one of my favorite purchases ever!)
Skirt: Ann Taylor Loft
Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell "Dipper" Platforms
Necklace: Ann Taylor Loft (this is actually two of the same necklace, just hooked together in the back)

Last night we went over to the Cedar Lee Theatre to see The Girl Who Played with Fire. It wasn't quite as good as The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, but it was still a good movie. Also, the theatre serves beer, so we got to have beer + popcorn with the film, and then we walked next door to the Lemon Grass and had crazy yummy Thai food. It was the perfect date night!

I hope that everyone else is having a wonderful weekend!

The . Oscars

So, I watched all four hours of the Oscars last night. I know people always talk about making this show shorter, but maybe someone of those people should think about cutting things like: weird dance numbers to the nominated films' music, or random tributes to horror films, or actors coming out and saying how much they thought of the people who were nominated. Or just throw in the towel and quit pretending you're even attempting to make the Oscars more compact.

In any case, the important stuff: who looked good. Most people looked quite lovely last night (Diane Kruger, Sandra Bullock), but in my opinion only Zoe Saldana had a "wow, that dress is crazy beautiful" moment. If you didn't see her in it, try to watch a quick video, as pictures do nothing for how the bodice of that dress looks under the lights.

There were only a couple of not-so-great dresses as well: Charlize Theron looked pretty, but had one of those "it looks like someone is grabbing her boobs" dresses on. And SJP, well, I don't what happened there.

500 . Days . of . Summer

I finally got around to seeing 500 Days of Summer. I'll use white text in this post from here on out, so that if you haven't seen it yet, it won't be spoiled for you. If you want to read on, just highlight the rest of the post and the text will show up.

This move made me feel very, very cranky. For no apparent reason. But you can ask B. - I was definitely ornery when he got home. Up until the last 15 minutes or so, I LOVED this movie. I have a crush/crush on Joseph Gordon Levitt and a total girl crush on Zooey Deschanel.

But I was kind of devastated when they didn't end up together, when she left him TO MARRY someone else.

Don't get me wrong, it's refreshing and wonderful when a romantic comedy/drama doesn't have a happily-ever-after ending. However, these two had such great chemistry and were so clearly meant for each other, it seemed unfeasible that she'd leave him for someone else.

Maybe this film is just more difficult to watch because it mirrors the experience that so many people go through, and there's no sugar-coating. But whatever it is, I certainly feel more than a pinch of disappointment.

The end.

Um . Yes . Please

I'm happy with the way that we've been redoing the house, but I do think that there's something quite appealing about a mostly white interior.

And in other unrelated news, we watched Terminator: Salvation last night. I was looking forward to it, but it turns out that if you keep watching after about the half-way point, it gets unforgivably bad. So if you must watch it, your only motivation should be that Sam Worthington is incredibly nice to look at.

SATC2

I feel like there's just no way anyone will be able to convince me to see this movie... at least not in the theatre. I REALLY liked SATC as a show. Loved. The first movie... loathe. WAY too much squealing. This newest SATC film looks like more of the same. It's like they forgot what made they show so good in the first place.

... also, Carrie in the desert?? She had to be dragged kicking and screaming to upstate New York!

The . Painted . Veil

This morning as I was having coffee and catching up on a few blogs, The Painted Veil was on the television. I'd seen this movie once before, but it's such a striking story (based on the Maugham novel) and beautiful looking film, that I couldn't help but be drawn into it again.

Charming

I have a little list of movies that I'm almost ashamed to admit that I watch. It's not even that I like them -- most are, by any standards, bad movies. But no matter. If I'm channel surfing and happen across one, I watch it. Doesn't matter how many times I've seen it before, I watch.

No Reservations is my latest guilty pleasure to add to that list.

The movie is nothing but a string of romantic comedy cliches: two people meet, there's a spark, there's a conflict, conflict resolves, happy ending. But Aaron Eckhart is just so gosh darn adorable, and there are sweet moments...so, le sigh, I watch it.

(In fact, it's on right now...there may be no help for me!)

This movie looks FABULOUS and like it could be a decent scary film!! But it won't come to your city unless enough people demand it!!
